一個共同願景----民有民治民享的政府(一)
亂世佳人(Gone with the wind, 1939 Hollywood film)的一幕，小女僕Prissy在遠處隆隆砲聲中，唱著My old Kentucky home, good night ! (1852)。突然，一聲巨響，Prissy掩耳驚叫，哼出By 'n' by hard times comes a-knocking at the door !
Prissy沒到過Kentucky，My old Kentucky home, good night !這首歌對她有什麼意義 ?
"My old Kentucky home, good night !"是廢奴制者( Abolitionists )的解放之歌。
廢奴制者的經典之作---長篇小說Uncle Tom's Cabin(黑奴籲天錄)，故事開頭發生在Kentucky州Federal Hill 的農場(Farm)。農場主人為償還債務，忍痛賣掉Uncle Tom和 Harry。Harry和母親逃亡在先，Uncle Tom悲壯離開妻子兒女、歡樂的農場和寬厚的主人。
Stephen Foster用My old Kentucky home, good night !敘述Uncle Tom的離情和永遠懷緬old Kentucky home，道出奴隸的籲天。
林肯總統出生與童年，都在Kentucky，懷著解放奴隸之志，離開Kentucky。
"Uncle Tom's Cabin"從1851年六月起，在華盛頓特區一主張廢奴隸制的報紙"The National Era"連載，推動奴隸制度的廢除。十年後，作者 Harriet Beecher Stowe到白宮與林肯總統見面。林肯說道 : 「原來您就是那位小婦人，寫下這本書，造成這個偉大戰爭。」( "So you're the little woman who wrote this book that made this great war." See, Abraham Lincoln and The United States, by K. C. Wheare, p.67)
林肯總統發布「解放奴隸公告」(1863.01.01) ，並在悼念蓋茨堡戰役英勇戰士的
演說中( The Gettysburg Address, 1863.11.19 )，許諾Uncle Tom和家人、Prissy和家人與所有獲得解放的奴隸，以及所有美國人，一個共同願景----Government of the people, by the people, and for the people(民有民治民享的政府)。
林肯總統領導美國人，走過"By 'n' by hard times comes a-knocking at the door !" ，回到 old Kentucky home，構築共同願景。
