「忠恕違道不遠，施諸己而不願，亦勿施於人。」(中庸第十三章) [附英譯1]
忠恕之道，己所不欲，勿施於人，離道不遠。
「夫仁者，己欲立而立人，己欲達而達人。能近取譬，可謂仁之方也已。」(論語雍也) [附英譯2]
孔老夫子說，成就仁道的君子，自己想立仁道而能立仁道，也教他人，使立仁道 ; 自己想行仁道而能行仁道，也教他人，使行仁道，如是成就仁道。修習仁道的方法，能近取譬，以身作則，行於忠恕之道，己所不欲，勿施於人，必能成就仁道。
己立立人，己達達人，屬仁道的積極作為。忠恕之道，己所不欲，勿施於人，屬仁道的消極不作為。兩者本質同一。從忠恕之道起步，修習仁道，以臻成就仁道。
忠恕之道或仁道，有手段和目的或方法與結果的關係，然係以每個人為道德主體的道德命題，皆屬道德觀念，其真實可靠性，應受檢驗。
