傑佛遜以其自然神論的信念，起草美國獨立宣言，引據造物主( The Creator )，至善理性上帝，宣示人人生而平等和天賦生命、自由與追求幸福等不可剝奪權利諸真理。
傑佛遜會認為這是天命 ? 只要率性，依循忠恕之道，得以自知自証，這些真理本身自明 ?
傑佛遜並不繼承中華民族的道統，但是，傑佛遜確信，每個人依據其天賦理性，得以自知自證，這些真理本身自明。
何以見得 ?
理性的功能在於辨識同( sameness )與異 ( difference )，並以此等同與異的先驗知識( knowledge a priori ) ，作為知識的原理原則，檢驗於矛盾律 ( rule of contradiction ) ，建立正確知識。( See, Timaeus, 37 a sq., also, Immanuel Kant, Critique of Pure Reason, op cit., pp. 16, 226 )
忠恕之道也俱有理性的功能 ?
